Case Reports Rhodococcus equi Infection After Lung Transplantation
نویسنده
چکیده
Rhodococcus equi is an emerging opportunistic pathogen in immunocompromised patients. A lungtransplant recipient developed weight loss, nonproductive cough, dyspnea, and somnolence. Computed tomogram showed a pulmonary nodule and pleural changes in the right allograft that was due to R. equi infection. Alteration of cell-mediated immunity is a predisposing risk factor for R. equi infection in humans. Our patient developed R. equi infection soon after a course of high-dose corticosteroids for acute allograft infection and animal exposure. A course of intravenous vancomycin followed by single-agent long-term therapy with oral ciprofloxacin was successful.

Pleural malakoplakia caused by Rhodoccocus equi infection in a patient after stem cell transplantation
Malakoplakia is a disease especially of the urinary tract with typical plaques most frequently observed in the urinary bladder's mucosa. In the context of immunosuppression malakoplakia can also occur in other organs. Some of these extravesical malakoplakias are associated with an infection by Rhodococcus equi, a rare human pathogen well known from veterinary medicine. Here we present the first...
متن کاملRhodococcus empyema in a heart transplant patient
Rhodococcus equi is a rare cause of pneumonia and empyema almost exclusively occurring in immunocompromised patients. Most people who become infected have direct exposure to livestock. We present a case where the exposure was presumed to be through a family member in close contact with horses. Our case describes an infection in a heart transplant patient that was initially identified as a proba...
متن کاملVertebral osteomyelitis due to Rhodococcus equi in a liver transplant recipient.
Rhodococcus equi is a rare but well-documented cause of cavitary pneumonia in immunocompromised patients. In this report the first case of R. equi infection manifesting as vertebral osteomyelitis is described. A 39-year-old liver transplant recipient presented with recurrent pneumonia and a pleura-based lung abscess and subsequently developed osteomyelitis of the lower thoracic spine. Surgical ...
متن کاملRhodococcus equi Sepsis in a Renal Transplant Recipient: A Case Study
Rhodococcus equi is an unusual cause of infection in humans, but has emerged as an opportunistic pathogen among immunocompromised patients. Primary pulmonary involvement is the most common clinical presentation, although the spectrum of disease is broad. Diagnosing R. equi infections remains challenging, both from clinical and microbiological view, and no standard treatment has been established...
متن کاملRhodococcus fascians infection after haematopoietic cell transplantation: not just a plant pathogen?
INTRODUCTION Rhodococcus spp. have been implicated in a variety of infections in immunocompromised and immunocompetent hosts. Rhodococcus equi is responsible for the majority of reported cases, but Rhodococcus erythropolis, Rhodococcusgordoniae and Rhodococcusruber infections have been described. There are no prior reports of human infection with Rhodococcus fascians. CASE PRESENTATION We des...
